We decided to do something NEW this year with our travels. We wanted to involve you, our reader, our supporters into our travel plans. After all, we created Spirited Navigators to inspire you to see more of the world, so why not find a way to take you with us?
As a result, we asked our readers on Facebook to give us travel challenges they would like us to take on in 2017. We received a ton of responses and randomly picked the following! Take a look!
Spin the Globe. Tell someone other than yourselves to spin a globe and with their eyes closed, stop the globe with one finger. Wherever the finger points, head there! (We’ve decided that if it happens to be a body of water with no land nearby, we’ll head to the closest land mass).
Discover Local History. Visit a place that reflects where you came from. It can be the town you live in, the town you grew up in, the town you were born in… Let’s not neglect where we are from.
Celebrate Holi. Get covered in colorful powder at the Holi festival, anywhere in the world.
New Continent. Visit a new continent.
Road Trip on a Tank of Gas. Go as far as you can on a tank of gas from your current town of residence, spend the night where you end up, and return back.
360º Unobstructed View. Visit a place that has a 360º of unobstructed view.
Pick a New Accommodation. Pick a style of accommodation you’ve never stayed in (6 star hotel, tent, sleeping bag under the stars, treehouse, AirBnB, hostel, etc.).
Train Travel in the US. Train travels have become a thing of the past in the USA. It’s not as glamorous as it once used to be. Train it to somewhere that could easily be flown or driven to instead.
Fly Under $100. Fly somewhere as far as you can for under $100. Lots of budget airlines going to farther and farther places.
Repeat a City, Do Something Different. Visit a city you’ve already been to but do something different that you didn’t do the first time.
Attend a Festival in a Foreign Country. Pick and attend a festival in a country other than the one you reside in.
Welcome to (State) Sign. Take as many “Welcome to (state)” sign as you can in the United States.
Photograph the Helpful Stranger. Take a picture with someone who has helped you in your travels, before, during, or after a trip. The help can be big or small and write down the story. “A taxi driver in Argentina walked me into the local airport, talked to the airline and airport staff to ensure I got on a plane leaving in 10 min. I wish I remembered his name.” – Eileen
Disclaimer: We had to omit two randomly chosen challenges because of the very specific travel date requirements to fulfill the challenges. We had prior travel commitments which would have overlapped with the suggestions. In those cases, we simply replaced them with two other challenges selected at random.
Our intention is to do 12 challenges, however, we picked an extra challenge in preparation for a “just in case” scenario. If something goes wrong with one of the challenges or we are feeling extra ambitious, we will have a 13th to take on.
Every challenge we embark on will be announced in advance via all our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat). The challenges will be documented on social media and of course a full report about the travels including photographs will be on our site. So no matter where you look, you’ll be going on these challenges with us!
We are incredibly excited for our 2017 travels and want to thank everyone who sent in their requests from the bottom of our hearts! It means so much to us to have your involvement in our world journeys.
THANK YOU and as always, Happy & Safe Travels!
